I think it’s one of the most kick-ass songs on the album. Somehow, I ended up being the person to use it. Then, Richard Elliot was looking for a song so he and Rick Braun contributed to the writing. “I originally started writing the song with Gerald Albright. “You might wonder why there are four writers on this one?” queries Lorber. He’s one of my favorite musicians period and he really elevated every song he played on.” Lorber co-wrote the insatiable “Memorex” with Richard Elliot, Gerald Albright and Rick Braun. He gets such a great sound, and his improvisations are always so fresh and musical. I was really blown away that he agreed to play on four songs. “Bob Mintzer is an incredible sax player, known for his work in the Yellowjackets.
Australian Musician experienced the Jeff Lorber Fusion show during the week and found it to be a perfect lesson in virtuosity, improvisation, listening and the sheer joy of playing and sharing musical ideas on stage with like-minded musicians.Space-Time also showcases the majestic flow and ease of “Mind Reader,” featuring Lorber and Mintzer doubling on the melody and then breaking stride and taking listeners on an adventurous escapade. Some of you may not know Jeff’s music but it’s been sampled by Jay-Z, Lil Kim, Notorious B.I.G. The band also features Gary Novak on drums and Patrick Lamb on sax.
AM editor Greg Phillips sat down with main man and fusion pioneer Jeff Lorber (keyboards) and bass great Jimmy Haslip (Yellow Jackets, Robben Ford) for a wonderful in-depth chat about their music and gear. It was the band’s first ever tour of Australia (although bass player Jimmy Haslip has been here several times with other artists). Jeff Lorber Fusion were in Melbourne for a week-long residency at Birds Basement.
